John was always a great inspiration for me. As Pastor of Salem EFC in the 1980's we had the privilege of watching John not only serve the people of Hong Kong so well but faithfully represent the Kingdom of God in the transition there. Later, when I becomes the EFCA's Urban and Intercultural Director I was, again, encouraged by John as he helped the Association of North American Evangelical Free Churches in their Church planting work. He was a GREAT advisor to me. Thank you good brother! I look forward to seeing you again in eternity.

Dear Grandpa, We didn't get to see you as nearly as we would've liked to, didn't get to have those enthralling conversations or quiet Bible study sessions with you. We didn't think you'd be out of our lives so soon after moving to the States. We were looking forward to y'all moving down South and spending more time with us as the years went on. But alas, God's Will was done, and He had bigger and better plans for you in Heaven. Your Earthly family will always miss and love you, Grandpa. Especially your Schnickelfritz'.

Story shared: Term of Endearment

Snickelfritz, which is a Pensylvanian Dutch term of endearment for young and talkative children, was always used by Grandpa Neir when referring to his grandchildren. I remember a sily noise that he would make with his mouth after calling me his snickelfritz. It warms my heart even now whenever I hear him calling me that in my head.

Story shared: Visits to the States

Whenver Grandma and Grandpa Neir would visit us in Hutchinson, they would stay in our basement. Every morning before school, depending on the time of year they were visiting, my little brother and I would go downstairs and sneak up on a sleeping grandfather. Grandma would usually be reading and not paying attention to her surroundings. We would then quietly wake him up before going into a fit of giggles.

Dear Doris, We were saddened to hear of John's death. Another soldier has gone home and what a joyous day that was for him. John's obituary was so well written and we rejoice in all the ways that God used John to spread the Gospel in China. We never worked in the same place as you both but will always remember the warm invitation John gave us to stay at your house while we were taking a little vacation in Hong Kong as a family... Dear Neir Family: It breaks our hearts when death separates us from the ones we love no matter how young or old they happen to be. We are reminded in the Bible that God sees our pain and sorrow and has promised that soon death will be done away with...swallowed up forever.(Isaiah 25:8) He will heal our broken hearts by resurrecting our precious loved ones to life again.(John 5:28,29) I hope in the days ahead as you reflect on the life of John, and the wonderful memories left behind, that you will also find much comfort in God's promises to us for the near future. I am so sorry for your loss.
