I met and worked with Roger at Gus Pech in LeMars. He was in the hydraulics department. Roger had his own opinion and he stood by it. He was the kind of guy who would back you if you asked him to. He was a friend of mine. He served in Viet Nam as a tank driver I believe. He told me these things and he would enjoy telling someone about these things he experienced. Some guys like to tell these things because they take pride in their service to their country. Roger had a good heart too. He came to me one day at work with a big box of cookies that his girlfriend and he had bought. He said we thought your kids would enjoy these. Well they sure did. He was a good worker too. He was himself.He liked to hunt, fish and bow hunt I believe. He'd tell me how he'd like to go fishing in his raft boat in a farm pond at night. He said the bass would bite good if they were biting and he liked the quietness out there on the water and be under the clear skies with the stars shining. Some guys who were in a war are like that. It gives them solace and comfort. He was a good guy to have as a friend. He had a sense of humor too. Roger had his own opinions and so do we. Sometimes your're right, sometimes you're wong. I knew Roger since we were kids. He was funny one minute and serious the next. When he laughed he would really laugh. He wrote me letters when he was in VietNam and I knew from the letters it was affecting him. After VietNam we worked on the railroad in Hawarden and we connected and always remained friends. 6 mo. ago he stopped at my sons shop and had some work done and gave me a jar of pickled blue gill, as always full of surprises!

I've known Roger since grade School. He always followed his own internal navigation, sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't. I know his Vietnam experience bothered him and most likely influenced some of his decisions in life that caused him to go right when he knew he should go left. The last time I talked to him, he knew he was going to die. He was alright with that. Roger found peace. Always from the grade school play ground to when we connected in LeMars I've considered him my Friend
